The 2017 NDSBA Annual Convention was held at the Ramkota Hotel in Bismarck on Thursday and Friday, October 26-27.

Jim Johnson (Fargo) was re-elected to lead the association as president. Mike Lautenschlager (Lewis & Clark, Berthold) was re-elected vice president. Also re-elected were Karl Lembke (Bismarck), Southwest Director; and Holly Stromsodt (Finley-Sharon), Northeast Director. Newly elected Northwest Director is Kim Bernstein, Bottineau.

The convention opened on Thursday afternoon with Rocky Bleier sharing his gripping tale of courage that involved both the football fields of America and the battlefields of Vietnam. The first business session followed Rocky’s presentation.

Friday morning opened with a keynote address from Dr. John Draper who offered support and encouragement to school board members and administrators to help them engage in the crucial conversations required to build community support for public schools.  Another general session was held from 1:15-2:15 with C. Ed Massey discussing the important relationship between the school board and superintendent and the impact of that relationship on student achievement. During the day on Friday several rounds of clinic sessions were offered (see above) that addressed many timely topics of interest to convention attendees.

The School District Business Managers had specific sessions that provided pertinent information for  their group.

Exhibitors were present on Friday to share expertise on their products and services.

Kim Semenko, president of the Williston School Board, was named the 2017 recipient of the Barb Norby Scholarship in recognition of her exemplary board service.

The Second Business Session and Delegate Assembly was as at 3:30 on Friday. The Delegate Assembly passed the following resolutions:

RESOLUTION READOPTED AS WRITTEN
TAXING AUTHORITY OF THE STATE
NDSBA shall oppose any attempt to limit the taxing authority of the state.

RESOLUTIONS READOPTED AS AMENDED
REGIONAL EDUCATION ASSOCIATIONS
NDSBA shall support the State of North Dakota providing separate and additional funding to REAs and work toward expanding resources to these REAs so educational opportunities for students and professional development for staff all across the state can be improved.

TAXING AUTHORITY OF SCHOOL BOARDS
NDSBA shall oppose any attempts to further limit or eliminate the taxing authority of school districts.
